Sea Level Variations over Geologic Time
نویسنده
چکیده
Sea level changes have occurred throughout Earth history. The magnitudes and timing of sea level changes are extremely variable. They provide considerable insight into the tectonic and climatic history of the Earth, but remain difRcult to determine with accuracy. Sea level, where the world oceans intersect the continents, is hardly Rxed, as anyone who has stood on the shore for 6 hours or more can attest. But the ever-changing tidal Sows are small compared with longer-term Suctuations that have occurred in Earth history. How much has sea level changed? How long did it take? How do we know? What does it tell us about the history of the Earth? In order to answer these questions, we need to consider a basic question: what causes sea level to change? Locally, sea level may change if tectonic forces cause the land to move up or down. However, this article will focus on global changes in sea level. Thus, the variations in sea level must be due to one of two possibilities: (1) changes in the volume of water in the oceans or (2) changes in the volume of the ocean basins.

Study of Sea Level Variations during Passage of Meteorological Cyclones over the Qeshm Channel
The main purpose of this study is the survey of the atmospheric low pressure effects at sea level oscillations in the Qeshm Channel. For this purpose, the curves of the pressure on the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea, during the passing of the atmospheric low pressure system, are extracted across the region. During the time of occurrence of these events, sea level oscillations in the coastal areas of...
متن کاملThe Study of Sea Level Pressure Patterns and Wind aloft Features over the Middle East and the Persian Gulf Area during Spring Transition
The meteorological conditions during the period of spring transition over the Middle East and the Persian Gulf and adjacent land area is investigated. Monthly and seasonal variations of large-scale atmospheric patterns and wind aloft features at different levels were drawn from data collected from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction and National Center for Atmospheric Researches. ...
متن کاملSea level history of the northern Gulf of Mexico coast and sea level rise scenarios for the near future
The sea level history of the northern Gulf of Mexico during recent geologic time has closely followed global eustatic sea level change. Regional effects due to tectonics and glacio-isostasy have been minimal. Over the past several million years the northern Gulf coast, like most stable coastal regions of the globe, has experienced major swings of sea level below and above present level, accompa...
متن کاملReport of a Physical Oceanography Research Project over the Southern Continental Shelf of the Caspian Sea
Abstract The study presents monthly variations of seawater properties, monitoring water column stability and stratification over the southern shelf of the Caspian Sea which depends on collecting data. Field measurements were carried out during 13 cruises along the southern boundary of the sea. Spatial and temporal distributions of temperature, salinity and density were investigated. Monthl...
متن کاملReconstruction of Sea Level Changes using Magnetic Susceptibility Variations in Southeastern Caspian Sea
Magnetic susceptibility is one of the most important tools for monitoring the sediment composition during environmental studies. In this research, in order to reconstruct the Caspian Sea level changes, magnetic susceptibility variations were used during the studies of 5 sedimentary cores (K1, K3, K5, K7, N1), collected from bottom sediments of Gorgan Bay. Samples were analyzed for grain size, t...
